PFT: Titans, Finnegan still far apart in talks

NFL Honors Press Room FootballAP

On Sunday, we posted a couple of items regarding the realities of the franchise tag under the new CBA.

To summarize, there?s a new formula for calculating the franchise tender.? Instead of taking the five highest cap numbers at a given position from the prior year, the new CBA starts with the average franchise tender for the last five years, determines the percentage of the tender under the overall salary cap over that five-year period, and the average percentage then determine the franchise tender for the current year, based on the new salary cap number.

In English, this means that if, over the past five years, the average franchise tender for a given position equaled five percent of the total salary cap, the franchise tender for this year will be five percent of the $120 million cap, or $6 million.

The problem is that, for the non-exclusive franchise tender, growth comes only via growth of the cap, with the percentage increase in the cap determining the increase in the tender.? If the top of the market for a given position grows at a faster rate than the cap, the franchise tender will reflect something less than what the top five players at a given position receive.

For example, Texans outside linebacker Mario Williams had a cap number of $18 million in 2011.? That number won?t be used when determining the franchise tender for outside linebackers in 2012.

But there?s good news, at least for the players who receive the ?exclusive? version of the franchise tag, which prevents the player from talking to other teams and/or entertaining an offer sheet that, if not matched, would yield two first-round picks as compensation.? For the ?exclusive? franchise player, the franchise tender continues to be determined by an average of the five highest player salaries at the same position as of the expiration of the restricted free agency signing period in April.

This means that, for a guy like Saints quarterback Drew Brees, the ?exclusive? tender could be much higher than $16.4 million.? It will eventually depend on, for example, whether Matt Flynn signs a front-loaded contract with a big cap number in 2012, whether Peyton Manning stays in Indy under his current deal (unlikely), and whether Manning signs with a new team for big money by the middle of April.

The final number won?t be known until those deals are done; thus, the Saints and Brees will be operating in the dark until those numbers are set.? Which could make it difficult to have any meaningful negotiations until the end of April.? Which could make it more likely that Brees won?t be available to the Saints when the offseason program launches, unless he signs the one-year franchise tender and reports for duty.

The Pub at Polaris |

The Pub, with a pint of Smithwick's - ? Michael Warth

Have you ever been to one of those ?themed? bars and said, ?man this is cool?? The Pub, at the Polaris Fashion Place Mall in Columbus, Ohio is just that kind of place.

Apple Store

Apple Store at Polaris in Columbus, Ohio - ? Michael Warth

I was there Saturday while shopping, and needed to hang out for about an hour while I waited on the Apple Store to complete a new purchase with upgrades. To kill the hour, my wife and I decided to grab a bite to eat at ?The Pub?.

Just a short walk from the Apple Store, The Pub is a British themed restaurant and bar. The staff is great, the decor is great, and the food and beer is awesome! There is a great selection of beer, both on tap and in bottles. The food is typical British pub fare with a twist, but still quite British.

We started with an appetizer (pretzels and cheese), a white chocolate martini (Lisa), and a pint of Smithwick?s (me), while we waited for our main course (we both opted for the Shepard?s Pie) to arrive.

The Main Course & Sampler Beer - ? Michael Warth

As you can see in the photo above, in addition to the Shepard?s Pie, I got a beer sampler featuring, Well?s Bombardier, Boddington?s Pub Ale, Fuller?s Extra Special Bitter, and Young?s Double Chocolate Stout. All of them were excellent, full-flavored English Draught beer, suitable for the meal at hand. My favorite beer was Young?s Double Chocolate Stout. For some reason, the taste and smell reminded me of my grandfather?s old smoking pipe.

Each beer in the sampler came in a small nonic glass (5 ounce serving), with a paper ?paddle? (wish it was a traditional wooden version). Honestly though, they offered beer from Ireland, Wales, and even domestic and European offerings as well. One can sample any one of the many beers the serve.

The menu is a bit overwhelming, but our server (Keith) was pretty patient and eager to help us out. Great service is a must in my opinion, and it looked to me that everyone at The Pub was being served well.

I?ll definitely be hitting this place up regularly. After the main course, we finished up with dessert, and a final drink before heading out to pick up my purchase from the Apple Store, and continue shopping. We were stuffed! Walking around the mall after a meal like this was painful to put it lightly, but it was all good.

If you get a chance to experience great draught beer of the UK here in the states, I would highly recommend it. As you already know, I hate the yellow fizzy crap sold in every beer aisle here, so finding The Pub made me quite happy.

Visit The Pub online, and find a location near you.?http://experiencethepub.com/
