Madonna helps fund University scolarship in Pennsylvania

Madonna?s concert tour promoter, Live Nation MTours Inc., recently donated $5,000 to the Brandon E. Bitner Memorial Scholarship at Susquehanna University, at the Bitner family?s request. The donation resulted from the family?s permitting a photograph of the Mt. Pleasant Mills teen to be used in Madonna?s MDNA world tour, as part of a video montage that decries bullying.

Brandon was 14 when he ended his life in November 2010, having described repeated bullying he endured from peers. At the Madonna concert, his photo is one of seven flashed briefly on a video screen, with his name and the message "R.I.P.," during the singer?s performance of "Nobody Knows Me." The montage has already been viewed by audiences around the world, with the tour scheduled to arrive in the United States August 28

"This has been a huge blessing to Brandon's memory," said Bitner?s cousin Katie Goodling, who maintains a website, www.brandonbitner.com, and a Facebook page, facebook.com/ripbrandonbitner, where video of the concert?s photo montage is posted. "I have interacted with so many different Madonna fans from across the world on Facebook, Twitter and even LinkedIn since [his photo] started appearing on the stage each night. They have been so supportive and kind."

When Madonna?s tour producers asked the Bitner family to name a donation recipient?one that raises awareness of bullying?they suggested the Bitner Scholarship at Susquehanna. Bitner was an accomplished violinist who played in what was formerly the university preparatory program?s youth orchestra. The scholarship fund has supported the talent of a Susquehanna music major each year since it was established in 2010. Senior violinist Amanda Simensky, of Westminster, Md., is the scholarship recipient for 2012-13.

"To see our efforts and the prominence of Brandon's Facebook page lead to something so huge is surreal," Goodling said. "I'm also extremely happy that LiveNation donated money to his scholarship, which helps keep it alive from year to year."

Survival statistics show hard fight when malignant brain tumors appear at multiple sites

ScienceDaily (Aug. 24, 2012) ? When aggressive, malignant tumors appear in more than one location in the brain, patient survival tends to be significantly shorter than when the disease starts as a single tumor, even though patients in both groups undergo virtually identical treatments, according to research at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Research Institute.

"We've known that certain independent factors, such as age at diagnosis, amount of residual tumor after surgery, and the patient's functional status are useful in predicting outcomes in patients with glioblastoma multiforme, but multifocal disease at time of onset has rarely been examined in this context. Two small previous studies were contradictory. Our study appears to confirm observations that disease in patients with more than one lesion is particularly challenging and that these patients tend to have worse outcomes. Matched survival analysis demonstrated that multifocal disease is a strong and negative independent prognostic factor," said Chirag G. Patil, MD, director of the Center for Neurosurgical Outcomes Research in the Department of Neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.

The researchers compared outcomes of 47 patients who had multiple tumors with 47 who had a single lesion, matching them for age, functional impairment scores, extent of tumor removal and radiation therapy and chemotherapy. Median overall survival for the multifocal group was six months, compared to 11 months for those in the single tumor group.

Patil, first author of an article in the Aug. 24 Journal of Neurosurgery, noted that a comparatively large percentage of tumors in the multifocal group appeared to be "treatment resistant," continuing to grow even after patients underwent radiation therapy.

Unlike earlier studies, nearly all of these patients were diagnosed and treated during the "temozolomide era," beginning in 2005 when this drug joined radiation therapy as the mainstay of glioblastoma treatment. Even so, 11 of the 47 patients in the multifocal group did not receive temozolomide because, the researchers suggest, disease progression is so quick that many patients are unable to start or complete standard therapies.

Patil said researchers believe cells of multifocal tumors may have an increased ability to migrate in the brain and invade normal tissue, leading to more rapid patient decline; recent advances in therapies for glioblastomas have not improved survival in these patients.

"A thorough investigation of the unique biology of these tumors and their invasive and migratory mechanisms is needed so we may develop a new generation of targeted therapies," said Patil, who received a Cedars-Sinai grant that will fund the study of genetic and biological differences between single tumors and those originating at multiple sites.

Glioblastoma multiforme is the most common and aggressive malignant tumor occurring in the brain, and patients typically survive 15 months when undergoing standard treatments. Other single-tumor patients in the larger pool from which those in this study were derived, had median survival of 16 months. The shorter 11-month survival of study patients is believed to result from the matching process: Because many of those with multiple-site tumors could not undergo complete tumor removal, their corresponding single-site patients had tumors with locations or characteristics that made them appropriate for biopsy only.

Bystanders help nab 2 in iPhone heist

Two men were accused of stealing an iPhone and iPad outside a downtown Starbucks on Thursday, and bystanders who tried to catch them were pepper-sprayed, police and witnesses said.

The pair finally were caught by a judge and his bailiff who were walking back to the courthouse after lunch.

?It was very surreal,? said County Court at Law Judge Jason Pulliam, who saw the pepper-spraying and helped detain the suspects with court bailiff Charles Cook.

Olga Adrian said she was sitting outside the Starbucks talking on her phone at lunchtime when a young man walking out of the shop grabbed her Apple gear and ran to a car parked near the Majestic Theatre on Houston Street, where an accomplice was waiting.

?I started screaming, ?Get him! Get him! Get him!'? Adrian said.

Aaron Palacios-Parro, 23, and his brother Jacob, 24, got out of their car to help.

?We were checking out that cutie over there and saw it all happen,? Aaron Palacios-Parro said. ?So (Jacob) got out and said, ?Let's go.'?

The brothers ran to the parked car and tried grabbing the iPad. Then one of the occupants pulled out a canister of pepper spray.

?He probably got half the can on me,? said Jacob Palacios-Parro, whose eyes were red and puffy as paramedics treated him.

The car drove away, tires squealing, and Cook and Pulliam gave chase. They stopped it about a half a block away and detained the two occupants until police arrived.

It was a chaotic scene as officers blocked Houston Street and paramedics treated the pepper-sprayed brothers.

The two suspects sat on a curb in handcuffs, saying nothing. Police did not immediately provide their names Thursday.

Many people are required to coordinate in order to fulfill the construction of a house or any other building, ranging from an architect to interior designers and civil engineers. The basic thing involved in the construction is the design of the building which they are planning to build. But often the case is that these people: architect, civil engineer or the interior designer might feel that the design that they are hoping to work out is not coming up well. This happens mostly because many of these people are not so well acquainted with 3D modeling.

3D modeling involves presenting one's designs using 3D animation which makes the designs come to life and make them appear almost real. It has gained much popularity in the recent times owing to the fact that they offer a number of utilities and tools in case of designing. However, the one thing that might prove to be a hindrance is that the software is not too easy to use and mastering the software in order to be able to use it properly might take years for some engineers and architects.

In such case one can hire the services of a building design firm which uses 3D modeling and other such software and services to present the ideas of an engineer or an architect in the way it was imagined by them.
