NEW YORK (AP) ? Singer Mary J. Blige says the Burger King commercial that caused major backlash for her was a "mistake."
The clip was released in April and featured Blige singing about the fast-food chain's new chicken snack wraps. It immediately went viral, and some in the black community said it was stereotypical. Burger King pulled it after one day and said it was unfinished.
In an interview with radio station Hot 97 this week, Blige said Burger King "made me look ridiculous." She said she thought she "would be shot in an iconic way."
Says Blige: "I wanted to crawl under the bed."
She said she initially did the commercial because she thought it would be a "great branding opportunity."
Burger King didn't immediately respond to an email seeking comment Friday.

New York, NY (June 29, 2012) -- Under-performance of small bowel biopsy during endoscopy may be a major reason that celiac disease remains underdiagnosed in the United States, according to a new study published online recently in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Investigators at the Celiac Disease Center at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC) found that the rate of small bowel biopsy is low in this country.
"The vast majority of people with celiac disease in the United States remain undiagnosed," said lead author Benjamin Lebwohl, MD, MS, assistant professor of clinical medicine in the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases, and a gastroenterologist and epidemiologist at the Celiac Disease Center, CUMC. "This stands in contrast to countries in Western Europe and Scandinavia, where patients with celiac disease are much more likely to be diagnosed. Are patients with celiac disease in the United States not seeking medical attention? Actually, this study shows that some of these undiagnosed patients may be coming to see a gastroenterologist and still are not getting the biopsy they need for a diagnosis."
Dr. Lebwohl and colleagues analyzed the Clinical Outcomes Research Initiative National Endoscopy Database (CORI-NED), a multicenter database that represents a broad section of endoscopy centers throughout the country, including community-based as well as academic settings. They identified all patients who underwent upper gastrointestinal endoscopy during the years 2004-2009 for one of the following reasons: Weight loss, iron deficiency, anemia, or diarrhea. "Any one of these symptoms could be compatible with celiac disease. We know that the blood tests for making this diagnosis are not perfect, and so we argue that most patients having an endoscopy for one of these reasons should have a biopsy of the small intestine to test for celiac disease."
In fact, physicians did a small bowel biopsy in only 43 percent of the more than 13,000 patients having an endoscopy during this 6 year period.
"We thought that biopsy rates would be higher, especially considering the increased public awareness of celiac disease," said Dr. Lebwohl. Although the rates increased somewhat over time, in the most recent year of the study (2009) the biopsy rate remained only 51 percent. "As a result, it remains possible that a patient with celiac disease may seek health care, see a gastroenterologist, and have an endoscopy, and yet may still remain undiagnosed."
These low biopsy rates were not uniform: men were less likely to have a biopsy as compared to women. This may provide a clue to understanding a long-observed curiosity: the lopsided gender ratio among patients with celiac disease.
"Men are just as likely as women to develop celiac disease, but women are much more likely to be diagnosed," said Peter H.R. Green, MD, professor of clinical medicine in the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases, director of CUMC's Celiac Disease Center, and senior author of the study.
"Perhaps men aren't being diagnosed because their doctors aren't biopsying them, even when symptoms are compatible with celiac disease. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy: men aren't being biopsied, diagnosis rates in men remain low, and so doctors erroneously think that celiac disease is a 'woman's disease,'" said Dr. Green.
Biopsy rates were also lower among older patients, African-Americans, and Hispanics. Dr. Green added, "We know that celiac disease can occur at any age, and is not limited to Caucasians; but here again this celiac disease stereotype of the young Caucasian is reflected in the biopsy practices of gastroenterologists nationwide."
The authors are planning follow-up studies that aim to educate physicians regarding the benefits of performing small bowel biopsy.

Bird dogs should really be given a bath to ensure that their coats remain fresh and healthy, although don?t be shocked if the hunting dog soon smells like his old self after washing. Bird dogs choose their own natural odor and do not take to the doggie deodorant that many groomers put on the hunting dogs.
When to bathe the hunting dog
It is advisable to get a hunting dog used to bathing as a puppy dog. Generally, hunting dogs do not like baths. They will often resist a bath, although it is critical for their health. Bathing does not merely clean the fur and make the hunting dog more inviting to pet, but it is additionally a excellent chance for owners to try to find fleas, ticks or bugs on the hunting dog as well. This could be preventative in the hunting dog getting many health conditions that are borne from these insects. If the hunting dog gets used to the water as a puppy dog, it will be simpler to bathe him as an adult.
How frequently to bath a hunting dog?
It isn?t good to bathe a hunting dog more often than once a month. This tends to let the coat dry out. The natural oils from the skin supply the fur a shine and also avoid itching and dried-out skin. Once monthly is okay for bathing a hunting dog. Many hunting dog owners who reside in four season climates will skip the winter months if they want the hunting dog to shake himself off outside.
What sort of shampoo?
Just like infants have hypersensitive skin and need special shampoo, so do hunting dogs. Owners must avoid using human shampoo on the hunting dog. There are many hunting dog shampoos out there. These should really be used in the bathing process. click here for further supplies for your hunting dog.
What type of water and where?
The laundry tub will work for smaller breeds, however the bathroom tub is perfect for larger breed hunting dogs. Fill up the tub up with warm water and ease the hunting dog into the bath. The hunting dog should really be held on to tight so that he doesn?t escape you can also utilize a flat dog collar or choke chain attached to a lead to keep control of your hunting dog, however keep in mind using a dog shock collar is not a wise decision while giving a bath. Speak soothingly to him and make it appear like a game. Splash water over the hunting dog and then shampoo him, being sure that the ears are washed as well. After the hunting dog has been shampooed, rinse the shampoo off. Wrap the hunting dog in a blanket and hold him as tight as you can to let him shake off the water. This can be done in the bathroom on chilly days, though the majority of hunting dog owners prefer that the hunting dog does this outside the house.
Never ever use water that is too hot or too cold for the hunting dog. Test the water by putting an elbow in the water ? if you find neither a hot or cold feeling, the water will probably be ideal for bathing.
What about grooming?
The hunting dog bath is a superb time to groom the hunting dog. His hair should really be brushed out and blow dried. The nails ought to be trimmed and the teeth brushed. Doggie deodorant will make him smell good for about one hour. He will quickly lick himself to ensure he becomes comfortable enough in his own skin.
Other possibilities?
If you live in a warm environment and have an outdoor shower, this could be better for the hunting dog. Bird dogs which might be very attached to the owner will also not mind showering with them. Many owners want a shower over a doggie bath since it has a tendency to rinse the soap off of the fur better.
Bird dog bathing may appear difficult, however it is required for the healthiness of the hunting dog. In some instances, for example if a hunting dog rolls around in dirt or worse, hunting dog bathing should take place immediately.
The Welsh government has been urged to ensure it makes the most of the 'huge potential' renewable energy has for Wales
Leading a call for the energy sector to become an economic driver for Wales, the National Assembly Environment and Sustainability Committee says a renewable energy delivery board is needed to co-ordinate energy developments. Initiatives could include a one-stop shop for advice to businesses and community groups to help them navigate the renewable energy planning/consenting processes.
The Committee also urges the Welsh Government to pursue the further devolution of energy consenting and financial incentive powers and to ensure that the incentives process for marine wave and tidal projects in Wales is on a par with that which already exists in Scotland.
"The energy sector in Wales has an important contribution to make in meeting EU targets for renewable energy generation, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and boosting the economy," said the Committee Chair, Lord Elis-Thomas.
He also said it was vital that people across Wales benefit from the huge potential of renewable energy, both onshore and offshore, adding that the energy effect on communities and the environment will need to be carefully managed.
The Committee report includes over 70 recommendations and leaves virtually no stone unturned. On planning, for example, it states: "The Welsh Government should pilot the introduction of a system that better integrates the planning and environmental permitting systems in Wales before the full introduction of a new system in April 2013. Such a system should be flexible enough to allow for some choice of which permitting route is the most suitable for each project."
On Electricity Market Reform (EMR) it calls for the UK Government's EMR measures to be implemented with greater transparency and speed and to ensure that stability is achieved in the longer term by confirmation of the changes to the Renewable Obligation Certificate regime beyond 2017 as soon as possible.
The most popular way for a person to come across a website in Hartford, NY is by going through a search engine.?Google is the most popular, so it?s important to target their results a lot more than other search engines. Businesses that use internet marketing and SEO have a clear advantage over those that don?t. Here are some incredible stats about search engines that you may not know:
75% of Americans use search engines on a regular basis.
56% of all Americans are using one each and every day.
40% of all search engine searches are for local businesses and services.
54% of Americans?frequently use the internet instead of the phone book to find local services.
92% of all nearby Hartford, NY searches will eventually convert into a sale.
?
The whole search engine industry used to be about very short ?keywords? that would lead people to finding the website they were looking for. Everyone used to merely type things like ?Hartford Real Estate? into a search engine, check out the first number of results then make a decision.
Businesses who fail to use internet marketing and SEO will have a difficult time getting new customers.
Nonetheless,?these times consumers have grown to be much better at searching with Google, so keywords have progressively become longer as a way to return far more relevant results. For instance, instead of just ?Hartford Real Estate? which may give us some good websites for that keyword, we might be looking for something a little more specific.
Therefore, we might type ?Hartford Low Price Apartments?. The reason we would do that is because we?re fed up searching through websites that don?t offer us the possibility to see any low price housing, so we?re searching using Google instead of simply clicking on various websites.
This kind of mentality seems to have revitalized the world of small businesses online. Instead of just searching for a product or service, people now look for a niche product or service in a particular area. This means that, instead of massive chains dominating the search results, small business websites that use internet marketing and SEO?(even in Hartford) are flourishing.
Without it, you simply aren?t going to know how to get your website found on the front page of Google when local consumers search for your product or service. The competition won?be that fierce considering that you?re competing for much more targeted keywords, but you?ll still need to be able to be found by these Hartford buyers in order to succeed.
With more people moving towards local searches, you?re going to need to target your internet marketing?to certain keywords and areas. If you fail to do it, you?ll be competing with the key players within your industry nationally, and it?s a battle you almost certainly won?t win.

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) ? Don Grady, who was one of television's most beloved big brothers as Robbie Douglas on the long-running 1960s hit "My Three Sons," died Wednesday. He was 68.
His "My Three Sons" co-star Barry Livingston, who played youngest brother Ernie, confirmed Grady's death to The Associated Press. Livingston said Grady had been suffering from cancer and receiving hospice care at his home in Thousand Oaks, Calif. But the exact cause and place of death were not immediately clear.
"It's the oldest cliche in the world when TV brothers start referring to each other like biological brothers, but he was the oldest, and somebody I looked up to and learned from a great deal about life," Livingston said.
Born in San Diego as Don Louis Agrati, Grady had a brief stint singing and dancing on "The Mickey Mouse Club" starting at age 13.
But he was best known by far as one of Fred MacMurray's "My Three Sons" on the series that ran on ABC and later CBS from 1960 to 1972.
The popular show, which featured MacMurray as a widowed aeronautical engineer struggling to raise three older boys, was among the longest running family sitcoms of all time with 380 episodes.
In the show's earlier years Douglas was actually the middle brother, with Tim Considine playing the oldest, Mike, and Stanley Livingston playing the youngest, Chip. When Considine departed, Barry Livingston became the adopted "third" son, and Grady became the cool, handsome and assured eldest brother that much of America adored.
A musical prodigy from a young age, Grady appeared with a band, the Greefs, in the series, and in real life played drums for The Yellow Balloon, who had a minor hit with a self-titled song in 1967.
He made a handful of guest appearances on TV series in the 1970s and 1980s, but worked primarily as a musician and composer, writing the theme for "The Phil Donahue Show" and music for the Blake Edwards film "Switch" and the popular Las Vegas show "EFX," a showcase for "Phantom of the Opera" star Michael Crawford.
"The one real through-line in his life was music," Livingston said. "I would think Don would love to be remembered for his great music as much as a teen idol and television icon."
??????????? The current educational trends are analogous to trying to pour five gallons of material into a liter bottle using a funnel. As you try obliviously a large portion of material spills out and is discarded or lost. I use a liter bottle as my analogy?s container, as a liter is recognized as the standard metric unit of volume, a universal standard. This symbolism appears to be what is happening in education, an attempt to find that liter bottle in terms of a student?s capabilities, a universal student standard.
??????????? In our many of our current public school settings, teachers have been stripped of their individuality and creativity, forced often through coercion to teach specifically to the standardized test and to be sure their students pass the test or face consequences. In an effort to meet federal No Child Left Behind, (NCLB) mandates, curriculum and lesson guidelines are in place in many school settings that are creating a more uniform and categorized package of material that students learn and retain and through this we are losing aspects of children?s identities and individuality as well as the teacher?s creativity, imagination and individuality. My concern is what is it that we are leaving behind in this rush and push for test results and standardization as we fill that student, that liter bottle.
As I began writing the idea of soul which is for me is a crucial aspect of our individuality is being stripped away from children literally through more and more organized and orchestrated emphasis on the test. Most people at first will attribute a religious connotation in when mentioning the idea of soul. I began to review ideas and research from various authors using the concept of soul as the heart of our individuality which provided a point of reference that felt good. I went looking back historically trying to find where the emphasis directed toward improving our scores in standardized tests began and it was during the period of the Cold War, when our attention was turned to beating the Russians that the federal government officially started taking a hand in legislating and pushing for standardized test scores.
The Vietnam War and the social awareness of the late nineteen sixties and early nineteen seventies created a bump in the road for standardized testing and the legislated learning processes however briefly. For a short period of time individuality was the norm again. Unfortunately this backlash only lasted briefly, due in part to the shift in scientific technology?s promoting and pushing of standardized testing, the days of independence were short lived. Today?s students and parents may take up the gauntlet again. The activism of the late sixties and early seventies was short lived as pressure for standardization ensued and the effort to teach innovatively became obsolete in many schools. The takeover of education by government state and federal was fully under way and innovation, individuality and the progressivism of John Dewey, a major proponent of individuality in education was being pushed aside.
The individual?s experience and involvement was the key to Dewey?s thought and to the educational premises of progressivism. It was tying these experiences to education giving context to the content that Dewey promoted. Dewey was adamant about society and democratic interaction in his pursuits of education. Dewey foresaw the direction our industrial society was headed as legislated and packaged learning began stripping away individuality for the corporate good. The goal of society to prepare needed workers and consumers was at a cost and that was losing a part of them as they fall prey to the standardized demands.
Sadly there are alternatives; in a community strength is in the interactions, relationships and implications. Within a school this can be powerful tool. This could be applied in a learning setting borrowing from Foxfire Core Practice three.
?
?The work teachers and students do together enable learners to make connections between the classroom work, the surrounding communities, and the world beyond their communities.? Foxfire Core Practices, 2009
Real education is about learning through and of experience. It is learning by doing. It is an environment where each person has input and interaction. This is a democratic classroom and this was developed in the early 1900?s by Dewey and was there as legislation pushed for standardization and simplicity in measuring using tests. There is a paradox in this type of education versus the standardized regime that is being imposed through NCLB and other legislated efforts.
?
?As nobody can become aware of his individuality unless he is closely and responsibly related to his fellow beings, he is not withdrawing to an egoistic desert when he tries to find himself.? He can only discover himself when he is deeply and unconditionally related to some, and generally related to a great many, with whom he has a chance to compare, and from whom he is able to discriminate himself.? William Pinar
?
We as individuals require others in our existence for triangulation as bearings or focal points of who we are.? It takes the input of other people for community and democracy to truly work and to develop. I had a professor in 1969 at Eastern College in St. David?s Pennsylvania, Dr. Tony Campolo, a professor of sociology, who has made more of an impact on me in the years since as I read his books and contemplated his thoughts. Dr. Campolo points to a growing issue in our culture.
?
?While the would be spiritual oracles fail to understand about our ?advanced? capitalist social system is that the means have been devised to make spiritual realities somewhat unreal to us.? More accurately, ways have been found in our consumer-oriented society to reduce spiritual hungers to emotions that can be gratified by purchasing the things being sold to us through the mass media.? Dr. Tony Campolo
?
It is not just church related spiritual realities Dr. Campolo is talking about here.? It is the gist of who we are, that inner aspect I will later refer to as soul, getting to know where we are in the world and why. The development and implementation of standardize testing has driven society to using such words as human capital in our viewing of students. Human capital verses human needs I can see why a mother would pull a second grader out of school because of testing.
Education should be an interdisciplinary event. It should be all encompassing, a lived in, a total undertaking. It is not the linear understanding of a school room and class XYZ that many traditional teachers and administrators adhere too and legislators want.? It is in dealing with more than just us but involving the world and community.
?
?It is through a concern with problems as they relate to mankind at large that it may be possible to create the type of understanding that will enable man to use with wisdom, those tools which have made this century the most promising and the most perilous he has ever known.? Elliott Eisner
?
Looking at our world view and how we communicate that to others and even to ourselves is important. How we go about educating and teaching our children should be a major concern. What they take from a lesson and how they use it in their own lives can be significant if we will provide the capabilities and allow this to happen. Sadly through a concerted effort schools have been stripping away the children?s individuality for the sake of standardization.
??????????? For many years now I have embraced within myself a different sort of understanding of the world.? In Native American culture all is sacred, every leaf, twig, rock, animal and human being. The idea of spiritual can be simply walking out the door to a brilliant sunrise or full moon as it inspires and fulfills that within.? I see education and curriculum in a similar manner, one of sacredness of spiritual fulfillment, more so than a curriculum map on a wall next to the essential question of the day, for those in learning focused schools. It is not a static fixed commodity some legislators want for ease of operation and it can change with the group and community that it is operating within.
As I researched and read curriculum theorists, many are bringing back the sacredness of learning of understanding and perhaps returning a culture lost in the midst of being found.
?
?The Community of truth, the grace of things, the transcendent subject, the ?secret? that ?sits in the middle and knows? ? these images emerge, for me, from my experience of reality as sacred and of the sacred as real.? Others may arrive at similar understandings from different starting points.? But I believe that knowing, teaching, and learning are grounded in sacred soil and that renewing my vocation as a teacher requires cultivating a sense of the sacred.? Parker Palmer, 1998
?
?Perhaps it is in our end of course test and graduation test mentality we are setting limits and parameters on our educative process. We have become so normalized through standardization and traditional molds we have become limited in perceiving anything different. Throughout history it has taken holy men and women, sages, and esoteric? s to bring back pieces of what is truly there.? It may be that curriculum theory is doing this with education.? Bringing back what could be. Trying to keep from children their inner self their individuality is hindering learning and development as a human.
Education and curriculum are alive ongoing and pervasive.? It is not a limiting plan of strategies as so many teachers and school systems presume. Can we look at curriculum and education in such a broad manner encompassing everything about us, our lived experiences, and our curricula vita?? It becomes so difficult to be outside the box when everyone else is inside. But for learning to be real and to progress, we as educators have to ruminate and see the more ultimate issues in life. We need to go beyond the content, beyond the traditional rhetoric of compliance to standards, and we need to imagine and put back that idea of democracy and experience that living and life provides, suggested so long ago by Dewey.? There is so much more to education and curriculum for teachers to consider than what is written down on paper.
?
?Education must ensure that not only the material but the inward life of the individual be developed.? Education should address not the isolated intellect, as the advocates of standards suggest it ought, but the hopes and dreams of the self of which intellect ? the complex reflective self ? is merely a part.? Allan Block
?
It has been a few years since I was introduced to Robert Fried?s books. My first principal who by chance was a recent principal of the year in Georgia had a book club for teachers.
?
?Passionate teachers organize and focus their passionate interests by getting to the heart of their subject and sharing with their students some of what lays there ? the beauty and power that drew them to this field in the first place and that has deepened over time as they learned and experienced more.? They are not after a narrow or elitist perspective, but rather a depth of engagement that serves as a base for branching out to other interests and disciplines.? Robert Fried, The Passionate Teacher
?
It is about passion and bringing that to the class room and passing it on to the students so as Fried states ?it will serve as a base for branching out?.? There should not be a limiting to curriculum or to education as so often currently imposed. I recall from reading many years ago that Henry David Thoreau told his friends when he left teaching, he needed to be a learner first and then and only then could he be a good teacher.? We need to set the example and be learners and in doing so pave the way, lay the tracks for each of our students.
?
?From the beginning, learner choice, design, and revision infuses the work teachers and learners do together.? Foxfire Core Practice one, 2009
??????????? The late Syndicated columnist Sydney J. Harris wrote in the late 1970?s of how education was like a sausage stuffing machine and should be more like culturing a pearl. We are taking away the essence of who the child is; this essence is what is missing and what is being left behind. In an effort to leave no child behind, all are having bits and pieces of the individual human being left behind. I would like to be optimistic and say borrowing from the great civil rights leader that as teachers, real teachers, ?we shall overcome? and we shall put soul back into the bottle of our children. I got a bit carried away today but continue to keep all in harm?s way on your mind and in your hearts and always give thanks.
EAST HAVEN ? East Haven got an enormous lift from their ace pitcher Michael Anastasio in a 5-0 win over Shelton last Sunday at East Haven High School.
Anastasio allowed just three hits while striking out six. He also went 2-for-3 with a triple and an RBI single.
''We came out and played as a team,'' said Anastasio. ''We hit the ball, had timely hitting, and we played good defense. My velocity was up today, and my curve ball and change-up looked good. I tried to mix it up all day to keep them off-balance. It was a good effort.''
Kyle Lockery paced East Haven?s offensive attack by going 2-for-2 with a single, double, and two RBIs.
The 89ers' loaded the bases in the first inning as Gary Flowers and Zack Korwek worked the count in their favor to earn walks, while Nick Lamberti and Andrew Hinckley scored for a quick 2-0 lead.
Lamberti went 2-for-3 with a single, double, a stolen base and two runs scored in this Zone II contest.
''Nick is a spark plug,? said East Haven coach Joe Pelliccia.
Shelton had a few golden opportunities to capitalize with runners in scoring position, but Anastasio?s pitching prowess and the Easties? defense prevailed in big spots.
''We have a lot of confidence and if you get pitching, it?s the name of the game,'' Pelliccia added. Continued...
Mike Ferro went 2-for-2 with a pair of singles for Shelton (4-3).
?We had some pretty good swings on the ball, and drove some balls very well,? said Shelton coach Fred Kelley. ?Sometimes you just have to tip your cap.?
Anastasio's counterpart, Jeremy Soderholm, walked two and struck out four.
''I thought Jeremy's change-up was very effective,? Kelly added. ?His change-up had a lot of bite in it, and kept them off balance to get some good hitters out. East Haven swings the bats very well. I was impressed with their hitting.?
The 89ers improved to 4-3.
''Hopefully, we start to get on a roll, and get on a winning streak and go from there,? Pelliccia said. ?I would like to see a little more hits with runners on base.?

PHOENIX (Reuters) - Republican Governor Jan Brewer hailed Monday's U.S. Supreme Court decision upholding a key part of Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigrants, while the law's critics said thousands of families will live in fear in the southwestern state bordering Mexico.
The Supreme Court supported the law's most controversial aspect, requiring police to check the immigration status of people they stop, but threw out three other provisions that had been challenged by the federal government.
"This is a day we have been waiting for, and make no mistake, Arizona is ready," Brewer, who signed the law in April 2010, told a news conference.
The law was passed by Arizona's Republican-controlled legislature, earning the praise of U.S. conservatives and inspiring similar statutes in other states. President Barack Obama's administration challenged it in court, saying the U.S. Constitution gives the federal government sole authority over immigration policy.
"We know the eyes of the world will be upon us, we know the critics will be watching and waiting, hoping for another opportunity to continue their legal assault against our state," Brewer said.
Brewer has clashed with Obama over the issue of illegal immigration and was seen wagging her finger at the president in a meeting at a Phoenix airport earlier this year. She called Monday's decision "a victory for the rule of law."
The three provisions that were struck down required immigrants to carry immigration papers at all times, banned illegal immigrants from soliciting work in public places, and allowed police to arrest immigrants without warrants if officers believed they committed crimes that would make them deportable.
Brewer expressed confidence that Arizona law officers would now implement the law "efficiently, effectively and in harmony with the Constitution" and said civil rights would be protected and racial profiling would not be tolerated.
Supporters say the law is needed because the federal government has failed to secure Arizona's border with Mexico.
Outside the state Capitol, a few dozen supporters of the law waved American flags and toted placards reading: "Stop sponging off the US taxpayer - go home," and "SB 1070 is fair and it works," referring to the law.
'LIVING IN THE SHADOWS'
Critics say the law, particularly the section upheld on Monday, would lead to racial profiling in a state where Hispanics represent nearly a third of its 6.5 million people. Of those, an estimated 360,000 are illegal immigrants. Most U.S. illegal immigrants are Hispanics, with many entering the country through Mexico.
"No American should ever live under a cloud of suspicion just because of what they look like," Obama said in a statement. "Going forward, we must ensure that Arizona law enforcement officials do not enforce this law in a manner that undermines the civil rights of Americans, as the court's decision recognizes."
Petra Falcon, the director of activist group Promise Arizona, said that with the ruling "thousands of families will remain living in the shadows and fearing the police rather than relying on them."
After Brewer signed the measure two years ago, thousands of activists took to the streets of Phoenix and called for a convention and tourism boycott.
Around 100 demonstrators, some toting placards reading "Brown Skin is Not a Crime" and "We are Human," gathered on the street opposite U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement headquarters in Phoenix following the ruling.
Some chanted "Stop 1070 - We will not comply," and "People Power," as volunteers handed out bottled water in 105-degree heat.
Activist Carlos Garcia saw nothing to celebrate in the court's ruling, saying "the life of the immigrant is worse today than it was yesterday." He called for a national day of "noncompliance" on July 27 to protest the law.
Phoenix Councilman Michael Nowakowski, a Democrat whose district is 68 percent Hispanic, said he felt the justices had left it open to see how Arizona would implement the law.
"What's happening here in Arizona is that we are rewriting a chapter of civil rights - whatever happens here ... is going to be the chapter of civil rights for our days," he said.
Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, a backer of the law who bills himself as "America's toughest sheriff," said the ruling should bolster efforts to crack down on illegal immigrants.
"It's important to show that law enforcement can still question the immigration status of a person they stop," said Arpaio, who is being sued by the federal government over alleged racial profiling and abuse of power. "We have to have that."
After the ruling, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security rescinded the authority a joint state-federal task force had given Arizona to enforce federal immigration laws.
Asked by Reuters if he thought the court ruling would make much difference in practice to how Phoenix police officers enforced the law, Police Chief Daniel Garcia said "No."

Capturing life?s special moments, in a meaningful way, is possible for anyone who goes out of their way to learn the nuances of photography. Though anyone can purchase a camera, not every person who holds one, will truly master it. Mastering the art of photography is a process that is learned and anyone who seeks out information can become a great photographer. Follow these tips to achieve your maximum potential behind the lens of your camera.
Invest in a DSLR camera. The single best thing you can do to improve your photography is to purchase a good camera. A digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera allows you to use lenses specific to the type of photography you are pursuing, and offer the ability to control every setting.
To shoot vintage-style photos, smear a dab of petroleum jelly on the outer edges of your camera lens (or use a lens filter, if you are worried about greasing up your actual lens). This technique blurs the edges of your shots, providing a fun, distorted look that mimics old-school photography.
A little bit of biblical wisdom can go a long way in photography, like doing unto others what you would have them do unto you ? i.e. smile! You need to be happy when behind the camera if you?re shooting other people as a photographer. Your energy needs to be infectious. People need to feel that energy to relate it right back.
Positioning of the subject can make the difference between a good photo and a great photo. The subject should rarely be dead center in the middle of the photo. When taking your photo, try to position the subject in the upper, or lower third of the image. This effect works best when there is a horizon in the distance.
Use the natural light that shines through a window to light your photos. This light is soft and diffused after it passes through the window pane and will create a beautiful light on your subject. Place your subject directly in the light of the window and you will be quite pleased with the results.
If you can?t use a tripod while taking photos for some reason, you should always brace your upper body on a solid surface. Hold your breath if you can while taking the shot. This will minimize shake during the exposure, resulting in clearer pictures. A tripod is always best, however.
When showing off your photographs, make sure to keep your less than perfect pictures at home. You do not want people to see your sub-par work; you only want them to see your best work. Delete any pictures on your camera that you do not want anyone else to see.
Take candid shots. Instead of taking posed pictures, try taking pictures of your subject with family at work or doing something they love. When your subject is comfortable they will be more at ease and you will end up getting some unique shots. This works especially well when trying to photograph children.
Just like it is recommended for an artist to keep some paper and a writing utensil on them at all times, a photographer should always keep a camera on them too. You never know when a photo opportunity will present itself, so you need to be prepared at all times.
A lot has changed since the camera was first invented. You want to make sure that you are using your technology to your advantage in every way that you can. Hopefully the information in this article will be useful to you and will enhance your photography skills greatly.

Leading on from Spacemaking in relationships, I?ve been thinking on the shapes that relationships take, and how it?s another thing that we don?t notice specifically, but is something that happens subconsciously as part of our engaging in relationships. We tend only to use a particular few styles of relationship shapes and I was thinking about this because the dynamic of my own multiplicity of shapes has changed quite a lot recently as have the shapes of a number of people close to me.
?
For myself, the change has come about because for the first time in a couple of years, I?ve got another set of relationships that are more like partnerships and less like satellite relationships. Another difference is that the relationship set is a three-way dynamic which is a relationship entity itself, but also comprises three sets of relationships between each person involved.
?
Some of you may find that this post seems more related to polyamory than relationships generally, and while I personally find it relates outwards to all my relationships, I am not separate from my poly-ness and others? experience may vary. I?d be interested to hear from any of you who do or don?t find it applicable being less polyamorously inclined.
?
So when I talk about relationship shapes, I probably need to define that a little for sensemaking.
?
When I am describing relationships shapes, the notion of shape refers to how you draw your bubble around the nature or meaning of the relationship for you ? and that will be different person to person. Imagine it?s like joining dots ? only you get to choose dots that are meaningful/useful to you and so it?s not like tracing lots of perfect conventional shapes ? each relationship is going to be different. Relationship shapes refer to how you mark the relationship, like a boundary or in a certain frame of reference. Markers vary between people, but can include the following (and many others I?m sure I?ll forget to mention): couple, threesome/triad, group, fidelity, monogamous, polyamorous, single, long term relationship, dating, short term relationship, long distance relationship, friendship, romantic, sexual, sensual, asexual. There are markers that will appeal to you, that describe different relationships to you and they are how you mark out the shape of the relationship for yourself and with the other(s) involved.
?
(If any of my geeky artistic readers can think of an artistic diagrammatic way of representing that concept I?m really interested in collaborating!)
?
I think of the shapes in my own universe (or network) of relationships as constellations and they are specific and sovereign to themselves, but also interrelate and enrich one another. . My array of significant relationships is quite considerable, and I have a mindmap that I use to convey to people a little of how my universe of relationships looks and the different ways in which I have conceived and created relationships, the? shapes within that map vary quite considerably.
?
You can see a public copy of the mindmap below where I've omitted names:
?
In the universe of my relationships, there are more relationships that are non-sexual than sexual, there are more relationships designated as chosen family or ?some kind of life partnership/companionship thing? than there are sensual, sexual, or romantic platonic relationships. There are more singular satellite relationships than group relationships or couple relationships (by which I mean where the coupleness is noteworthy for those relationships). What is also useful to note here is that some of these relationships have shifted over time to become one shape from another shape. Fixedness is a false absolute, it?s a decision point that we commonly enforce upon ourselves, but unnecessarily so. Relationships can change their nature if there is an allowance for the possibility and this can occur through outside stimulus to relationships, or be part of an intentional decision between parties.
?
For example, a job opportunity may send Alex overseas indefinitely and they may choose to shift their relationship with their partner to being a friendship having no idea when or if they will return. Alex may also choose to continue the relationship long distance and that may be open or closed. Or, in another scenario Robin could notice that they feel their relationship with Jean is becoming less romantic for them and seek to shift it into a shape marked by friendship rather than romance or sexuality. There are many possibilities and permutations; this is just an example to give you some practical context for what I mean.
?
Ultimately, what I am drawing attention to is that, even being aware that relationships are all different and can happen in many different ways we still hang onto other societal conditions that we may not be aware of, that may be worth questioning. Consider that you get to choose your relationships ? you get to influence the shape of your relationships in conjunction with the other people involved. You may think on this and still end up in the same place you started out and not change anything about how you construct and conduct your relationships ? and the purpose of my talking about this is not to create shift or change. My purpose is to promote awareness and conscious thinking about how we draw mark and define the shapes of our relationships, extending from my previous discussion on spacemaking. Shapes are a way of creating space or marking out space.
?
I?d love to hear about relationship shapes that you?ve experienced that you found unusual for you. Or, tell me about how this idea of shape and relationships relates to you and your universe of relationships ? not just romantic/sexual relationships, but friendships and family and others as well. Talk to me about the different shapes you find challenging or that don?t work for you ? there?s so much to look at here and I?m curious how it looks for others.
