Dhoni blames rain for spinners? poor performance ? Cricket News Update

Following the dismal performance of the Indian spinners against Australia, which culminated in a humiliating 9-wicket defeat for the Men in Blue in their first ICC World Twenty20 Super Eights match, skipper MS Dhoni defended his decision to play three specialist spinners, claiming the rain had severely hampered the effectiveness of his spin bowlers against the Aussie batsmen.

Despite initially having been hesitant to use five specialist bowlers which would lead to a depleted batting line-up, Dhoni opted for the risky combination in the team?s final group stage match against England ? a dead rubber, with both teams already having qualified for the Super Eights.

The combination of three specialist bowlers did wonders against the Poms, who were forced to concede a massive 90-run defeat, with the spin duo of Harbhajan Singh and Piyush Chawla proving particularly deadly.

The Men in Blue opted for a similar line-up in their first Super Eights match, played against Australia at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on September 28 ? however, in the damp slippery conditions, the combination backfired, earning the skipper a fair amount of flak.

?We played with five bowlers in the last match,? Dhoni said, pointing out that the combination had won the team the match against England. ?To say that the bowlers didn't bowl well based on this one match would be wrong because we need to take into consideration the conditions ... It rained towards the end of our innings.

?When the ball gets wet there is not much there for the spinners ... there was no real grip for them and that was the main reason we were not able to put pressure on the Australians.?

Dhoni rested veteran batsman Virender Sehwag in order to play Harbhajan Singh, Ravichandran Ashwin and Piyush Chawla, but the decision proved costly. Not only did the batting order fail to rack up a substantial total, the specialist spinners were unable to claim any wickets, and the trio gave away a collective 66 runs in just 6.5 overs.

Commenting on the batting performance which had preceded the bowling, Dhoni revealed that owing to the early wickets which had put pressure on the team, they had decided a score close to 145 would be sufficient ? however, the team had obviously not banked on the rain, which would later render their bowling attack impotent.

?We had a score of 145-150 in mind but we hadn't thought ... that it would rain like this,? he said.

Georgia Southern University Student Wins Muhammad Ali Writing Award for Ethics

Georgia Southern University senior Evin Hughes has won the first ever Muhammad Ali Writing Award for Ethics. The award, co-sponsored by the Muhammad Ali Center and the Norman Mailer Center and Writers Colony, in partnership with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE), is given to the outstanding college student whose writing reflects Muhammad Ali?s legacy of living a life dedicated to high ethical standards.

Lonnie and Muhammad Ali, and director, screenwriter, and producer Oliver Stone will present Hughes the award and a check for $10,000 at the Norman Mailer Center?s fourth annual benefit gala on Thursday, October 4, in New York City. Actor Alec Baldwin and Tina Brown of Newsweek Magazine and The Daily Beast.com will host the event, which celebrates renowned and emerging writers alike. Hughes, a Swainsboro, Georgia native, will also receive a week- long writing workshop next summer at the Mailer Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts, travel and hotel accommodations and tickets for the Gala.

The essay by the Georgia Southern dual major in Information Technology and Writing and Linguistics, emerged as the winner among eight semi-finalists and four finalists from such universities as Columbia, Georgetown, Oregon State, George Washington, Notre Dame and Alabama.

The three judges who read his prize-winning essay, ?Float like a Plane, Sting Like a Bomb: The Ethics of U.S. Drone Attacks,? included noted author and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr. Elie Wiesel. In his nearly 5,000 word-winning entry, Hughes wrote about the harm of drones as weapons in ?the war on terror? and of a hopeful new future devoid of the violence created by drones.

The writers were judged on their understanding of the ethical issue posed in their essay, as well as for original thinking and insight, effectiveness in presenting a point-of-view and achieving an overall emotional or intellectual effect.

?This recognition of Evin Hughes reinforces the power of writing,? said Georgia Southern professor Phyllis Dallas who encouraged him to enter the contest.

?We faculty in Writing and Linguistics know that writing can affect the world, whether it is a poem or story that captures for its reader the beauty of language or an insight or emotion that leaves the reader knowing, as C.S. Lewis wrote, that we are not alone; or whether it is a finely crafted essay like Evin's that brings together his ethics, his critical analysis of a subject, and his synthesis of the research and writing of others to articulate an argument that asks its reader to consider and see their world anew and to question how to achieve peace and social justice.?

Donald Lassere, president and CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center said, ?The Ali Center is so proud of Evin and the rest of the student finalists and honorees being recognized at the Norman Mailer Center?s Gala. ?This has been an outstanding partnership for the Ali Center and it has afforded us another opportunity to share Muhammad?s legacy with the younger generation which Muhammad and Lonnie care so much about.?

The Norman Mailer Center is an educational non-profit dedicated to supporting and celebrating those writers who challenge the status quo and surprise their audiences. ?The Muhammad Ali Center?s mission is to preserve and share the legacy and ideals of Muhammad Ali and the National Council of Teachers of English is devoted to improving the teaching and learning of English and the language arts at all scholastic levels.

LEXINGTON, Ky. (Sept. 21, 2012) If a mother exercises during her pregnancy, will that benefit her children? Researchers at the University of Kentucky have initiated studies to look into the idea: a group from the UK Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences has received a $100,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health to study whether maternal exercise during pregnancy can lead to a reduced risk of cancer in offspring.

Using animal models, the research team will test the effects of voluntary exercise during pregnancy on chemical-induced carcinogenesis in the offspring and also look for potential mechanisms for long-lasting stress protection.

The new study is based on a previous small pilot study in mice that showed offspring born to exercised dams had improved glucose regulation and enhanced stress protection compared to offspring born to sedentary dams.

The goal, says researcher Kevin Pearson, an assistant professor for the UK Graduate Center for Nutritional Sciences, is to find relatively simple, short-term interventions for the mother such as regular exercise during pregnancy that elicit protection against many common diseases in her offspring.

"The benefits of exercise for individuals have been studied extensively -- everyone knows that exercise is good for you," Pearson said. "But what if it not only helped you, but also your children? We think there's a high probability that parents will stay committed to a short-term exercise routine during pregnancy if we can show that it can provide a lifetime of beneficial effects for their sons and daughters."

Russian punk band supporters expect little of legal appeal

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian court's decision to hand two-year jail terms to punk band Pussy Riot for performing an anti-Kremlin song in Moscow's main cathedral prompted fury in the West and refocused attention on President Vladimir Putin's rights record.

But as a judge prepares to rule on Monday on an appeal filed by the three female jailed band members their legal team and their relatives hold out little hope that the sentences - which they believe were overly harsh - will be quashed or reduced.

"Such a decision is impossible," said Mark Feigin, a defense lawyer. "The courts are not independent and to imagine them making a decision based on the law would be a fantasy."

The case has damaged the Russian government's reputation in the West and raised awkward questions about its relationship with the Russian Orthodox Church, while the West's criticism has angered the Kremlin and irked many Russians who view the women as publicity-hungry provocateurs rather than freedom fighters.

The appeal ruling will have serious implications for the trio involved. Stanislav Samutsevich, father of Yekaterina Samutsevich, one of the three, never went for more than a month without seeing his only daughter before she was jailed.

In the seven months since she and the others were detained he has visited her in prison every other week and in court.

But if Monday's appeal fails to overturn the two-year jail sentence handed down to her and her two band mates for "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" she will be sent to a distant prison colony and he will only be allowed rare visits.

He now spends his time surfing Internet forums to chat with other convict's relatives about prison conditions.

"When I last saw her on Friday, she complained about the lack of information. She was worried about how to react, about what will happen after the court," he told Reuters. "I was calming her down."

Opposition activists argue that the harsh sentences were personally ordered by Putin as part of a crackdown on dissent following his return to the presidency in May, an event foreshadowed by the biggest protests against the former KGB agent since he was first elected head of state in 2000.

Putin has repeatedly said he did not and will not interfere in the judicial process, though Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has said he thinks the trio should be released.

LENIENCY?

Some saw Medvedev's comments as a sign that the trio may receive leniency but political analysts say he has little power to influence the appeal, and other moves suggest the Kremlin is in no mood to allow the women's release.

It has a limited incentive to do so. Although the West has criticized the verdict, opinion polls showed a majority of people in mainly Orthodox Christian Russia opposed the Pussy Riot protest, though fewer wanted tough jail sentences.

Parliament expelled an opposition leader from parliament earlier this month and has pushed through laws raising fines for protesters, stiffening punishment for defamation and tightening controls over foreign-funded lobby groups since May.

Another bill under consideration in parliament, where Putin's United Russia has a majority, would institute jail terms of up to three years for offending religious feelings.

Andrei Isayev, a party deputy from the ruling United Russia party, in his radio program this month called the women's conviction "just and humane" punishment for a performance he likened to "dancing on the graves of believers' relatives."

Samutsevich, 30, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, and 24-year-old Maria Alyokhina were sentenced on August 17, six months after criticizing Putin's close ties with the Russian Orthodox Church in a "punk prayer".

The trial exposed Putin to international criticism because of doubts over the independence of the judiciary, and global celebrities including British musician Paul McCartney, a former Beatle, and U.S. pop singer Madonna, called for leniency.

A Church statement after the verdict indicated that the clergy would back a pardon or a reduced sentence, but that would have required the women to admit their guilt. They have not done so.

They say their protest, in brightly-colored balaclavas, tights and short skirts, was not intended to offend believers and was motivated by anger over Putin's growing closeness to Patriarch Kirill, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.

Kirill has called Putin's rule a "miracle of God" and backed his presidential election campaign this year. Kirill dismissed criticism of his backing for the Kremlin on Friday, telling students that close ties between the church and state helped protect and develop society.

But the debate over whether the three women should have been jailed has deepened a split in society to a degree rarely seen since the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991.

Soon after their trial, a group that took responsibility for the desecration of four wooden crosses that were chopped up in Russia said it was a protest against Pussy Riot's jailing.

A group of ultra-religious opponents of Pussy Riot has started organizing vigilante patrols at night in Moscow because its members fear the state cannot protect church property.

The bill criminalizing insults to religious sentiment could tighten the bonds between Putin and the Orthodox Church.

"The law is being drafted to protect the process of the merging of the church and state," rights activist Valery Borshev said. "It will be selectively applied to those who speak out."

3-D videos show how plant roots navigate

New 3-D videos showing how plant roots navigate their environment could help to improve crop growth in areas with difficult soil conditions.

The research, outlined in the latest Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, reveals how certain plant roots exhibit powerful mechanical abilities.

PHOTOS: D.C. Cherry Trees Turn 100

For the study, scientists from Cornell University and the Boyce Thompson Institute for Plant Research grew barrel clover (Medicago truncatula) plants. This plant is a small legume from the Mediterranean often used in research projects. The scientists grew the plants in a transparent gel with two layers ? a soft top layer and a stiff lower layer. These layers mimic the different conditions plants face in various substrates.

An advanced 3-D time-lapse video system recorded that the roots grew straight down until they reached the lower layer. There, they began to twist and buckle into spring-like shapes, similar to the way that a string begins to curl if it's continuously twisted in one direction.

ANALYSIS: Clear Soil Could Improve Crops

"When the roots hit the stiff barrier, growth causes them to buckle like a wire or rod that's been compressed. But by twisting, the buckled roots become helical, allowing the root to push off more gel and get more force at the tip," Jesse Silverberg, a Cornell graduate student in the Department of Physics and lead researcher for the study, was quoted as saying in a press release.

"Suppose the plant is growing along and finds itself stuck at a layer of clay or tough clump of soil," Silverberg continued. "The root needs an extra force to push through these barriers, and the mathematical model tells us how large of a helix the root needs to grow to do just that. Roughly, the stiffer the barrier, the larger the helix."

ANALYSIS: Sinking Tomatoes! Where Did the Farm Go?

Mechanics plays an important role in determining root shapes. This study uncovered a previously unknown connection between root geometry, growth and force generation. In this particular case, 74 percent of the plant roots twisted in a counter-clockwise manner.

Samsung and AT&T announce Galaxy Note 2, Tab 2 10.1, two mid-range LTE devices

Android Central

AT&T and Samsung made a hefty joint announcement this morning which includes the Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Galaxy Express, and Galaxy Rugby Pro. They don't say anything about pricing or availability for any of these, other than that they'll be landing "in the coming months". That's not particularly helpful, but them's the breaks. At least we're pretty sure that we'll see the Galaxy Note 2 in November.

We're already plenty familiar with the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the Galaxy Tab 2, but let's take a closer look at these other two LTE devices, starting from the left.

Samsung Galaxy Express

  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 4.5-inch Super AMOLED Plus display
  • 1.5 GHz dual-core processor
  • 2000 mAh battery
  • 5 megapxiel rear camera

Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro

  • Mil-spec 810g rugged and waterproof
  • 4-inch WVGA Super AMOLED screen
  • 5 megapixel rear camera with 720p video

That's some decent mid-range stuff all around. Sure, it's not quite as flashy as the upper-end Galaxy Note 2 and Tab 2 10.1, but it's always nice to have a rugged phone that doesn't entirely suck. Anyone biting on these two, or are you going to hold out for the upper-end devices?

Sound Real Estate Advice And Guidance For Property Buyers | Eric ...

There?s nothing that can make buying real estate easy, but the first purchase is always the hardest. Many first-time buyers feel overwhelmed by the cost and commitment of a property purchase. Use the following advice to help ease your worries, increase your confidence and hopefully, your success.

Be informed about the different types of houses located in the neighborhood which you?re interested in. You don?t always want to shoot for the biggest house in any particular neighborhood. If you decide to sell the house in the future, it will be difficult for you to obtain the value of the house. This is because every other competing house in the neighborhood will cost less.

During the home purchasing process, make sure you hire the people you rely on for expertise. Do not hire the appraiser or inspector chosen by the seller. Hiring your own appraiser can be an extra cost, but it will be worth it. Nevertheless, you can benefit greatly from hiring your own professionals who are trustworthy and will be working for your best interests. This is one situation where learning the truth can potentially save you thousands of dollars and much heartache.

TIP! Find a trustworthy partner to work with when buying a large and expensive commercial property. It will facilitate the qualification process for the commercial property loan.

It is important to get pre-qualified for a home loan before you go searching for a house. It is very discouraging to find the perfect home only to find you can?t get a loan for it. Getting approved for a loan also takes quite a bit of time, so it is best to get this out of the way as soon as possible.

Go for your dream home. Some investors say that it isn?t a good time for buying or selling larger houses, but some disagree. This may be the best time to buy your dream property because housing prices are expected to rise.

Homes that back up to busy roads are not as appealing as those that are in quieter areas. Don?t purchase a bargain property that will only earn you a minimal amount of rental income. You might be okay with this noise, but it will be harder to sell it if you want to move.

TIP! A home should only have a fireplace located in the family room unless the property is located in a particularly chilly climate. It can be difficult to keep up with fireplaces, especially if you don?t use them.

The first thing to do before you even move your family or furnishings into the new house, is to buy insurance. If you put this off your insurance will not cover anything that happens, disaster can happen at any time!

When considering a home, hire only professional inspectors. It will require a fair amount of money, but the advantage over having someone you know inspect the home is that you can hold a bad inspection against a professional inspector, while there is little you can do to a relative.

Have any questions you wish to ask your potential real estate agent written out so you don?t forget anything important. Ask them for important information. This can include how many houses they have sold in the past twelve months and how many they sold near the location you?re looking at. A reputable agent will definitely be able to answer all questions you have.

TIP! When interviewing agents to help you through the buying process, find out how long each agent has lived in the town or area in which you are searching. A long-term resident will know more about the community?s infrastructure, local laws and neighborhood characteristics that a newcomer may not know.

Real estate agents need to get a hold of their former clients during anniversaries and holidays of their date of purchase. When they hear from you again, they will know that they helped during your buying selling experience. When you are done with your greeting, make sure they know that you are working as a referral and would love for them to recommend you to anyone they know.

When you are negotiating the price of real estate, it is best to have a moderate approach. Many people get too aggressive so that they can get a great deal, and they end up overdoing it and losing it. Simply state your preferences and then let the lawyer and the Realtor handle the negotiations as their job descriptions require!

Try not to be discouraged if the seller of a home you want to purchase does not accept your offer, often times sellers are willing to negotiate different aspects of the sale with you, to make the sale still possible. Such possibilities include offering to cover your closing costs or even do some upgrades and repairs to the property prior to your taking up residence.

TIP! Before you begin searching for a new home, get a copy of your credit report. After you have the credit report in hand, review your copy and report any inaccuracies that you might find.

When looking to purchase a new home, it is very important to avoid the trap of judging a house based on its decor. Smart sellers hide their house?s flaws with decorative items, so you need to learn how to look past the decor and analyze a home based on its architecture and structural condition. If you base your buying decisions on only the home?s decor, you could pay for it later because you failed to see a large structural problem.

After reading this, are you fired up now about buying some property? These tips should help you get rid of your worries! Utilize the tips that fit into your particular circumstances in order to have maximum success. Purchasing real estate shouldn?t be hard. It feels great to finally own property! All you have to do is calculate its cost, and always make smart

Polaris Office (for iPhone)

Office documents are rarely as accessible as they should be. On a tablet or smartphone, and namely iPad and iPhone, plenty of apps give you some access and interaction with the files you need to stay productive, but it's limited unless you buy Apple's dedicated office apps Pages, Numbers, and Keynote (for word processing documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, respectively).

The productivity app Polaris Office ($12.99) for both iPhone and iPad radically changes the office landscape. It's an alternative to Apple's iWork suite for editing documents, creating new ones, and saving them either to the Polaris Office app or into popular cloud-based storage services, such as Dropbox and Google Drive (formerly Google Docs).

Polaris Office's price is even more competitive than it may first sound. Buying the $12.99 app lets you install both the iPad and iPhone versions, and they include three productivity categories (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations) in one tight bundle. A similar app called Quickoffice Pro HD (recently? acquired by Google) costs $19.99 and only installs on iPads. Apple sells its Pages, Numbers, and Keynote separately for $9.99 a pop.

For its solid functionality at a great price, Polaris Office is an Editors' Choice among productivity apps for the iPad.

Supported File Types and Services
Polaris Office supports.doc and .docx word documents, .xls and .xlsx spreadsheets, .ppt and .pptx presentations, .txt documents and PDFs.

You can connect your Polaris Office app to a solid, but not comprehensive, selection of popular cloud-based services: Google Docs, Dropbox, Box, and WebDAV services. The comparable app Quickoffice has a few additional services, such as SugarSync, Evernote, and Catch?I'd love to see Polaris Office adopt a few more services to its list, too. In any event, integrating with a cloud-based storage solution lets you bypass iCloud in some sense, as you can use the other service to sync the files you create on your iOS devices. You can start a document on your iPhone, save it to Dropbox, and edit it tomorrow using Polaris Office on your iPad. Or you could open it on a Windows or Mac computer in another program of your choice.

Interface and Usability
An intuitive interface helps boost how productive you can be with Polaris Office. There's little to learn that isn't explicit from the button names, simple instructions, and interface design. Sample documents, one of each of the three main varieties, come preloaded in the app. Their contents contain instructions for using the app and its features, so be sure to read and explore them.

A few unconventional controls, however, take some getting used to. For example, the convention for selecting text on an iPhone or iPad is to press and hold the screen until the text is highlighted and spanner bar controls appear, which you can drag to adjust how much text you need to select. Polaris Office has you double tap to select text instead, which any seasoned iOS user would simply never try off the cuff. It's an instruction you have to read to know.

Another example of unconventional controls: When scrolling on most iOS apps, you can swipe up and kind of flick the page to make it continue scrolling even after you release your finger (until it slows down and stops or you touch the screen again to regain control). Polaris Office uses this motion when you look through lists of files to open, but the motion is a little different once you open a document. Inside a document, you can scroll with a flick, but only if you touch the margins, which is difficult to do on an iPhone unless you zoom way out. Even then, the motion is "stickier" and the pages flow at a pace that's different from what you see in other apps. This difference isn't a show stopper, but it was noticeable.

Getting to Work
You can edit your office files in Polaris Office, with some basic limitations?but even these constraints are on par with what you might find in Google Docs or even Microsoft's free Web app versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (they're wrapped into the online and cloud service call SkyDrive. For example, you can't track changes or enable macros, but that's not possible in Google Docs or SkyDrive either.

The tools easily cover the basics and then some. You can format text, insert images, save files as different file types (export to PDF, for example), change the page layout, alter the type of cell in spreadsheets, look up formulas, sort, play a presentation, and much more.

When testing the app on a speedy iPhone 5 with a Wi-Fi connection, documents loaded extremely quickly. You can open any file in a near-full screen mode, collapsing the top toolbar. In landscape mode, the toolbar disappears permanently.

Another minor damper on the productivity party was that when I searched for a document that was in my connected Google Drive account, Polaris Office couldn't find it. I later realized that you have to search each of your connected storage spaces separately, so the first search bar I encountered was only for documents created and saved in Polaris Office. When you first open a connected storage are, such as Google Docs, you won't see a search bar at first glance. But it appears when you pull down the page?it's just kind of hidden and tucked away at the top.

Polaris Office for Productivity
Polaris Office couldn't be a better deal. For just a few dollars more than what it would cost you to buy one of Apple's office apps, you can get three, all rolled into one tight productivity machine. Plus, Polaris Office works on both iPhone and iPad, which is like getting another two-for-one deal, with no subscriptions or add-on fees. I should hope future updates will smooth out the few unconventional controls, and maybe add a couple of more services to the storage options, but nevertheless, it's a great app that easily is a PCMag Editors' Choice.

???? We want to preamble tomorrow?s nutrition talks with the fact that each class will have different instructors, and depending on what class you go to, the message delivery might be slightly different but the message itself will be consistent:? Nutrition is the foundation of our fitness and health, and only your fitness and health can tell you whether what you are eating is right for you or not.? Put another way, just because Greg Glassman, Barry Sears, Robb Wolff, Mark Sisson, Whole 9, Loren Cordain, Diso, Me, G, McCoy, that new Paleo Book you?re reading, the Zone block chart you?re using, the food podcast you?re listening to, tells you to do something, does not automatically qualify them for your dogma diet status, nor does it invalidate the other approaches.

???? It is our goal to expose you to as many best practices as possible, nutrition and otherwise, because of the varying degrees of excellent results that come from these practices.? The differences between said practices are something to celebrate and experiment with, and are accessible to everyone.? If you ask the top ten athletes in our gym about their food, you will see a pattern that is very similar, but with 10 slightly different strategies to get there.? Diso?s nutritional guide is posted above, expect to see the rest of the staff?s in the future.? Here are my top ten meals, and experiences gathered:

1.? Instead of favorite meals, I?ve got a Protein/Carb/Fat template of food to choose from and mix and match;

Protein ? Beef (Skirt or Tri tip mostly), bison, lamb, goat, ground, salmon, cod, halibut. Grass fed, free range, and wild caught if possible.Carb ? kale, broccoli, sweet potato, strawberries, blueberries, lemon juice. Organic, farmer?s market if possible.Fat ? avocado, almonds, mac nuts, coconut oil, fish oil

2.? Brian?s Bowl of any sort. Caveman and chicken italiano are my favs.3.? Spring Mix Chicken salad from Rainbow Acres.4.? Mendocino Farms make your own salad: Pork belly, bacon, avocado, greens, beets, apple, almonds, vinaigrette on the side. (thank you Sean DeGuzman)5.? Make your own shake:? Blueberries, almond milk, peanut butter, whey protein. (thank you McCoy)6.? Steak salad from Pitfire Pizza.7.? Moroccan chicken salad from CPK.8.? Anything from the Venice Alehouse!? (thank you Jess)9.? Regular Pemmican bars from USWellness Meats, and OhMyBars, either Tan or XXX.? YUMMY!!10.? 3 x 2 Protein style, Animal style, no pickles, from In ?n Out Burger.

*****************************************

In March 2008, my blocks were 17P 17C 17F.
In August 2012, my blocks were 20P 12C 60F, approximately.

I take 6 to 10 grams of fish oil daily (1 to 2 tablespoons.)? Without a doubt, Fish Oil at high enough doses is integral to our training and performance.? Without it, I and a bunch of high level performers will not be able to perform as we do.

I have an SFH Post WOD shake with 4 parts water, 1 part coconut water after every workout.? Sometimes 2 to 3 a day.? Been on this for over a year.? It helps with soreness and I feel better, but I do not see it as more than a supplement to Paleo/Zone/Fish Oil.

Your performance over time is the ultimate arbiter of your nutritional needs.

No matter how many times and in how many ways I dance around this subject, no matter how many debates I?ve been in and refereed and watched and listened to, I can neither get simpler than nor stray far from:? Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds,? some fruit, little starch, no sugar.? Keep intake to levels that will support exercise but not body fat.

Avoid nutritional homilies, Argumentum ad vercundiam fallacies, assertions made A priori, or anything method based absent data.?

Try everything and see what happens.

If you?ve been here for a while, we would love to hear your top 10 meals, lessons learned, and rules of your own.

Two High School Teachers May Be Better Than One

Two heads are better than one, or so the saying goes. But in a high school classroom, are two teachers better than one?

"It's all in how you implement it," says Susan Fitzell, an educational consultant. "It doesn't work if you just have two bodies in the room."

To be effective, both teachers need to be interacting with students, breaking them into small groups, and teaching to the needs of individual students, says Fitzell, a former special education teacher who began coteaching at Londonderry Senior High School in New Hampshire in 1993 and now coaches other educators on how to coteach.

While Fitzell says she's seen an increase in schools pairing two general education instructors in one classroom to manage larger classes, coteaching teams typically pair a special education teacher with an instructor specializing in general education areas, such as math or science. This allows students with learning disabilities to take the same courses as their peers while still receiving individualized instruction, she says.

[Find out why high school students aren't prepared for college.]

Coteaching can also give educators an opportunity to accommodate students who learn at different paces, Fitzell says.

"When you've got five, six kids in the class that didn't get the core instruction you taught the first 15 minutes of class, you can zero in on what they need immediately, right there in class," she says. "If you've got two teachers in the room, you could do a quick assessment, then reteach the students who need reteaching while allowing other students to accelerate--all within the same class."

[Learn how students with disabilities can find the right college.]

Sharing responsibility for planning, grading, and teaching can benefit educators as well as students, but only when there is buy-in from both teachers.

"If teachers share the same work ethic, and have skillsets that complement versus compete with each other ... coteaching can help prevent teacher burnout," says Brenda Zofrea, who taught reading and language arts to freshmen at Central High School in Florida, but resigned after one year.

"Having another teacher in my overcrowded classroom to help with lesson plans, discipline, and being able to provide more one-on-one attention to my students would have made all the difference," she says.

While collaboration and communication are key elements to a successful coteaching partnership, ceding control over their classroom can be a hurdle for some teachers, Wendy Murawski and Lisa Dieker, two professors, note in an article for the Council for Exceptional Children.

"Secondary [school] teachers are by nature often more territorial because of the subject-specific environment, and are often accustomed to teaching in isolation," they wrote.

The combination of high-stakes testing and the in-depth subject knowledge of teachers at the high school level can make teaching in tandem tricky, but the payoff for students makes it a challenge worth navigating, says Fitzell, the coteaching expert.

"Before I did coteaching and inclusion, I never saw a kid on an IEP go to college," she says, referring to individualized education plans tailored to students based on their learning challenges. "By having students in general education courses at a level that's respected by colleges ... and coteaching to make sure that these kids can be successful, we have kids that will go to college that would never have that opportunity otherwise."

Leo Tolstoy: The Death of Ivan Ilyich, 1886 | A Just Recompense

Lilias Buchanan: "Gerasim" from the series of illustrations for "The Death of Ivan Ilyich"

Lilias Buchanan: ?Gerasim? from the series of illustrations for ?The Death of Ivan Ilyich?

Ivan Ilyich?s life had been most simple and most ordinary and therefore most terrible.

My local Fiercely Independent Community Bookstore scheduled this book for this month?s Classic Book Club meeting. Being embarrassingly deficient in my Classic Lit, I read it. As it happened, it was raining on the night of the meeting, so I didn?t go (yes, I?m a wimp). But at least I read it, and therefore I can still post about it.

Not that it needs much posting about; it?s one of the most reviewed books on the Internet, including a wealth of material at the NEA?s Big Read site. The novella in translation is available online as well.

I have this problem with ?classic? literature. It?s like with Star Wars. Yes, Star Wars, the original Star Wars. I saw it (with a geek friend) in 1977 (and like everyone else in the theatre, thought they?d got the reels out of order when ?Episode IV? rolled across the screen), and it was astonishing. Lightsabers, complete with Doppler shift sound effects! All those incredible aliens in the bar! The homage to the classic Western! Holy cow, have you ever seen anything that amazing?!? If you?re under, oh, 30, you?re probably wondering what the big deal is, because, gee, it?s a movie. The big deal is, this was in the era before PCs and smartphones ? before Pacman, for pete?s sake. It was new, and it was spectacular.

So maybe it?s hard for me to get excited about The Death of Ivan Ilyich because I?ve been reading books about dying for decades. K?bler-Ross published On Death and Dying almost a decade before Star Wars, in fact. The white light and sense of peace has been part of the culture for a couple of generations now.

Not to mention literature about the shallowness of societal demands and the too-late realization that one has lived an empty life chasing The American ? or The Tzarist Russian ? Dream. Nearly 20 years ago Paul Tsongas? book Heading Home, about his own impending death, quoted the wisdom of his friend, Arnold Zack: ?Nobody on his deathbed ever said, I wish I had spent more time at the office.? Methinks Zack read Ilyich. That was, by the way, a century after Tolstoy wrote his novella.

Hey ? I wonder how Tolstoy knew all about that stuff back in 1886? Maybe that?s why it?s so classic, y?think? Aha ? the light dawns.

In terms of the story itself, there?s a progressive mounting of tension, culminating in said death. But ? hey, it?s a book, that?s what books are supposed to do. What else you got?

What interests me most is how this fits in with Tolstoy?s biography. He underwent a crisis of faith in the early 1880s and decided the Russian Orthodox Church, and his aristocratic background, had misguided his life. This story/novella is an expression of his new brand of spirituality (which got him excommunicated in 1892); the character of Gerasim, the servant who is the only one able to offer Ilyich any comfort, manifests his belief in peasants as those closest to God.

Gerasim is the only one who isn?t awkward around the dying Ilyich; he elevates Ilyich?s legs on his shoulders for hours at a time, which somehow brings some relief from the pain. The generosity isn?t lost on Ilyich, or on the reader, which is why I chose that particular illustration from Lilias Buchanan?s wonderful series of illustrations to accompany this story. This character matches my experience with the current American health care system: distance from actual hands-on patient care and impact upon patient comfort is inversely proportional to a health care worker?s status and pay. Your doctor may give the orders that cure your disease, but your CNA will make you feel better (or turn life into living hell. It works both ways).

The structure is also worthy of note. We start with the end: Ilyich?s funeral. His friends pay their respects but really have their regularly scheduled card game on their minds. Peter, his closest friend ? who is not all that close ? is made most uncomfortable when he sees Ilyich laid out, particularly when he sees the expression on the dead man?s face:

The expression on the face said that what was necessary had been accomplished, and accomplished rightly. Besides this there was in that expression a reproach and a warning to the living. This warning seemed to Peter Ivanovich out of place, or at least not applicable to him. He felt a certain discomfort and so he hurriedly crossed himself once more and turned and went out of the door ? too hurriedly and too regardless of propriety, as he himself was aware.

By the end of the book, the reader is certain that Ilyich himself probably experienced the same discomfort, the same feeling that ?this has nothing to do with me,? many times himself. So while this chapter provides a preview of how little impact Ilyich?s life had on those around him (other than an interest in who might assume his position in the court), it?s also an indication of how Peter Ivanovich might spend his last days on this earth ? that he, too, might repeat the same mistakes Ilyich learned from too late, because he shows no sign of pondering his own mortality.

Ilyich?s marriage seems to have started out well, considering:

To say that Ivan Ilyich married because he fell in love with Praskovya Fedorovna and found that she sympathized with his views of life would be as incorrect as to say that he married because his social circle approved of the match. He was swayed by both these considerations: the marriage gave him personal satisfaction, and at the same time it was considered the right thing by the most highly placed of his associates.

But this sours as time goes on, and as his career path fails to meet his expectations. His career makes a recovery, which is more than we can say for Ilyich, who injures himself while hanging draperies in his new house, the house he?s so proud of now that his position is more in line with his expectations. It?s hard to resist the urge to diagnose; does the fall have anything to do with his illness? That seems to me to be the clear implication, that his promotion (and his obnoxious insistence on things being done a certain way rather than relying on those who know how to climb ladders and hang draperies) is directly responsible for his death.

His denial is shared by his doctors, family, and friends, whose refusal to acknowledge the obvious decline in health is more for their comfort than his. I recognize some bargaining (he hires a ?celebrity doctor?) and then anger at his family and depression. He doesn?t reach acceptance until two hours before his death (and about a hundred words before the end of the novella):

And suddenly it grew clear to him that what had been oppressing him and would not leave his was all dropping away at once from two sides, from ten sides, and from all sides. He was sorry for them, he must act so as not to hurt them: release them and free himself from these sufferings. ?How good and how simple!? he thought. ?And the pain?? he asked himself. ?What has become of it? Where are you, pain??
He turned his attention to it.
?Yes, here it is. Well, what of it? Let the pain be.?
?And death?where is it??
He sought his former accustomed fear of death and did not find it. ?Where is it? What death?? There was no fear because there was no death.
In place of death there was light.
?So that?s what it is!? he suddenly exclaimed aloud. ?What joy!?

Notwithstanding the title ?The Death of Ivan Ilyich,? the death itself occurs only in the last sentence, with only the first chapter devoted to the aftereffects. I?m pretty convinced this is because his life, as lived, had no significant aftereffects, and that is in fact the moral point being made. It?s our lives that make our deaths significant; in Ilyich?s case, it?s a matter of rescheduling a card game, and that?s about it. One of the readers in the NEA Audio Guide mentions how the initial chapter also firmly establishes there will be no remission for Ilyich; there?s no tension of whether or not he will die, but merely how, and how his life will affect his death. This is pretty much the case for all of us, and is a point Tolstoy included via structure. His own personal crisis of faith seems to have begun with the visceral realization of the fact that he would, in fact, die. It?s one thing to know, intellectually, that everyone dies; it?s quite another to truly grasp it.

I kept thinking of my own family as I read the book. My mother died when I was nine; she was rarely mentioned again, as no one wanted to ?upset? me. In retrospect, it was probably their own ?upset? they were avoiding. I grew up thinking it was something to be ashamed of, having a dead mother, so I avoided telling anyone. By the time my father died 30 years later, my family hadn?t changed much, but I had.

So maybe this particular piece of classic literature is more current than I first thought. Maybe that?s why classic lit becomes classic ? because it sends out ripples that are picked up by other works, because it has meaning across oceans and cultures and centuries ? because it lasts. Y?think?

Retiring Sen. Snowe of Maine plans book for 2013

(AP) ? Sen. Olympia Snowe plans a few words about politics even after leaving office.

The Maine Republican, who has cited Washington's partisan atmosphere as the reason she is stepping down this year, has a deal with Weinstein Books for a publication due out in the spring. Weinstein is billing the book, currently untitled, as a "memoir and call to action."

"The point is that elected officials have a responsibility to take on the issues that are confronting the nation," Snowe, who plans to work on her book with a collaborator, said Monday during a brief telephone interview.

Snowe and fellow Maine Sen. Susan Collins have long been moderate Republicans, an increasingly marginalized part of the party. Snowe, a consistent vote-winner for decades, shocked Maine's political establishment in February when she announced she would not seek re-election after three terms. She said at the time that the "sensible center has now virtually disappeared."

During the interview Monday, the 65-year-old Snowe listed several reasons for her unhappiness with Washington, from the influence of money to the growing trend of politicians appealing to their "base" and not to the broader public.

"We are constantly mired in ideological/philosophical debates with no solution," she said.

Her choice of publishers is an example of working with the other party. Weinstein Books' Harvey Weinstein is not just an Oscar-winning film producer, but a prominent Democrat. Snowe said she was grateful to Weinstein for his "strong interest" in the book and in "having this voice heard, this voice of practicality."

"Senator Snowe's core message ? that bipartisan cooperation is critical to effective government ? is equally true of book publishing," Weinstein said in a statement. "This is a book that should be read by all Americans, whether liberal or conservative."

For her book, Snowe was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, a Democrat with his own bipartisan history. Barnett's clients include such top Democrats as President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton and such top Republicans as former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Financial terms for the book were not disclosed. According to Weinstein Books, Snowe will share her "family story as the daughter of a Greek immigrant and first generation American, and being orphaned at the age of 9 and widowed at age 26, tragedies that influenced her approach to public service and formed her philosophy.

"Additionally, it (her book) will include her insider's accounts of her legislative experiences with some of the monumental issues and key political figures of the last 30 ? the 2008 economic crisis, health care reform, and the debt ceiling among them."

Weinstein Books is a partnership with the Perseus Books Group and part of the multimedia Weinstein Company co-founded by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein.

Insurance company bets on benefits of integration | Health Policy ...

Insurance company bets on benefits of integration

By Katie Kerwin McCrimmon

The biggest obstacle to blending physical and mental health care is money.

Doctors can?t bill insurance companies for treating their patients? mental health woes and psychologists can?t treat physical ailments. So the two health specialties remain separate, while confused patients get splintered care and often get sicker.

Most experts acknowledge that the system is ridiculous, but feel shackled to insurance company billing codes.

Enter an insurance company that wants to prove once and for all that integrated physical and behavioral health care is both better for patients and less expensive in the long run.

In a new experiment set to start next spring in western Colorado, the nonprofit health insurance company, Rocky Mountain Health Plans, will give hefty ?umbrella payments? to three primary care practices that are already working to integrate behavioral health. Also known as ?global payments,? the funding will replace traditional ?fee-for-service? payments that reimburse doctors for each visit with a patient or each test they order. The insurance company will then encourage the health providers to give patients excellent integrated care. That will vary from site to site and will depend on patients? needs. Care could include a traditional office visit with a doctor or a health coach, email exchanges, telephone counseling or a typical counseling session. Patients will get all the care in the familiar setting of their primary care office.

At the same time, Rocky Mountain will give the control groups ? three other primary care practices that are also trying to integrate behavioral health ?? reimbursements under the traditional ?fee for service? model, where providers bill for appointments and procedures.

Actuaries and data experts will then compare costs and patient outcomes. (Click here to read more about the experiment.)

The aim is to prove quickly that patients do better when doctors are paid to keep patients well rather than worrying about seeing as many patients as fast as possible to keep the cash flowing. Rocky Mountain ultimately wants to change the way it pays providers throughout Colorado and spur change around the country.

?This is not an academic exercise,? said Patrick Gordon, director of government programs for Rocky Mountain and executive director the Colorado Beacon Consortium, a coalition of nonprofit health groups that is seeking to boost the quality and efficiency of health care in western Colorado. ?This will be a transformative pilot that is being built with the goal of replicating success across the country.?

Throughout Colorado, Rocky Mountain insures about 220,000 people. Altogether the primary care practices that participate in the pilot will serve 30,000 to 50,000 patients including the full spectrum of privately and publicly-insured patients. The organizers have not yet picked the practices that will participate.

Rocky Mountain is fronting the cash for the reimbursements. A group called the Collaborative Family Healthcare Association?will coordinate the project while the Colorado Health Foundation?is paying for an evaluation to see how well the three-year program works.

Clinical psychologist Benjamin Miller ?will evaluate the effort. He is director of the Office of Integrated Healthcare Research and Policy in the family medicine department at the University of Colorado Denver.

?This is a total game changer in every facet,? said Miller. ?It?s disruptive innovation. We?re telling the system, ?We?re not going to play by the old rules anymore. We?re going to play with new rules and we want you to operate as a team.??

Miller said the experiment ?takes off the handcuffs of payment reform? and should produce some useful results.

?Everyone wants to know the answer to sustainability,? he said.

Currently, doctors are stuck trying to string together grants, fudge billing codes or give free office space to counselors in hopes that they?ll provide help to patients while creating their own streams of revenue.

Under the new concept, worries about finances will be gone.

?We?re going to take that off the table. Here is the financial support to make this sustainable,? Gordon said.

Rocky Mountain is pumping millions into covering up-front costs for various efforts to strengthen primary care practices and thereby reduce much more costly health expenditures such as surgeries, ER visits and lengthy hospital stays. The effort to integrate behavioral and physical health is part of the larger vision to bolster primary care.

Gordon could not say exactly how much the integration experiment would cost. But, in the long run, he and others are confident that giving patients much better primary care will help achieve the elusive holy grail of health reform: ?bending the cost curve,? or slashing the increasing costs of health care in the U.S.

?We know that behavioral health integration is absolutely essential,? Gordon said. ?The cost and structure of the payment model will probably vary from site to site. This project will give us much deeper insights into what those factors are.?

Gordon said initial estimates show that if primary care practices give high quality integrated behavioral and physical health care to all patients in western Colorado who earn at or below 250 percent of the poverty level ? or about $56,000 a year for a family of four ? health providers could cut the rate of growth in health expenditures by 4 to 5 percent over three years.

?Even relatively modest impacts on (growth) trends can produce more than enough to pay for all of these interventions,? Gordon said. ?It also puts us in a position to share gains with government payers and employers.?

The ultimate goal is to make behavioral health sustainable in primary care. That means giving people help with a much wider array of issues beyond traditional mental health concerns such as depression or schizophrenia.

For instance, Gordon cites the potential benefits of a technique called motivational interviewing in which health providers spend time asking patients how they want to change their lives. The technique can help change unhealthy behaviors such as smoking, poor diet or a sedentary lifestyle, all of which lead to poor health outcomes.

?When you engage a patient in what they want for themselves?they are much more likely to ?change elements of their own behavior,? Gordon said. ?This is very much in contrast with the traditional didactic approach of most conversations between physicians and patients.?

One of the most promising methods for inducing behavior change is to start group visits for people with diabetes, for pregnant moms or for obese people.

?They have proven to be very powerful,? Gordon said. ?You get a peer dynamic. And it?s the group that drives the discussion more than an authoritarian physician.?

Select A Unique Collection Of Party Dresses For Plus Size Women ...

The advent of clothing lines especially for full-figured women in recent years has proven that skinny can not always be ?in.? Being fashionable is a privilege women of all size should be able to enjoy. In fact, to feel gorgeous one does not have to be a size zero, right?

Considering these aspects, several changes in women?s fashion have taken place over the years. Not only have regular retail stores started catering to women of all sizes, there are even brands that are now established exclusively for women of full-figured sizes. It is, no doubt, a revolution in itself, for plus size clothing to take over the market with such gusto. One can go shopping and find a wide range of outfits for daily wear in plus sizes. From simple T-shirts, shirts and tunics to stylish blouses, cardigans and dresses, casual attire that spells chic is no longer a choice only thin women can make.

Moreover, plus size formal dresses, office plus size wear, designer plus size clothing, plus size party dresses, and plus size wedding attire are easily available in markets. These changes have deeply impacted the way women dress and think, allowing women to be more confident and not let size be an impediment to making a fashion statement. For that matter, there are numerous pieces of clothing that one can do justice to, only on a full-bodied figure!

It will not be surprising if you conclude that clothes for full-figured women come with a huge price tag, since they are especially tailored. This is a myth that needs to be broken. Women?s clothing in larger sizes is equally priced and not unique in any sense. Yes, what is unique is that women who are not skinny or lean need not hide their style quotient in the closet any more
