It's World Intellectual Property Day! To celebrate, a new public service announcement video was issued to raise awareness of the consequences of theft of movies and TV shows.
The video was released by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), which has been involved in an effort since June to target websites selling counterfeit goods and copyrighted content that is being illegally distributed. Since the effort began, they have seized 120 domain names.
When web surfers go to those sites such as dvdcollect.com now, they see the video and a warning not to break the law.
"Intellectual property rights and the ability to enforce those rights encourage American companies to continue the tradition of American innovation and develop products, ideas and merchandise," says ICE director John Morton. "That is why we will continue to educate the general public about the real consequences of IP theft."
