(Matt Dolloff / Mix 104.1)
Mix?s annual Not So Silent Night came to a close on Night 2 with Neon Trees bringing down the house at Lansdowne Pub, delivering their brand of kinetic pop-rock with the kind of live energy rarely seen in pop music today.
Frontman Tyler Glenn clearly draws inspiration from Freddie Mercury, the legendary lead singer of Queen, as an artist. He combines a powerful and sometimes operatic singing voice with flamboyant fashion sense, a vibrant personality and magnetic stage presence. And oh yeah, he and the rest of Neon Trees write some pretty damn good songs, too.
The band opened with the frenetic ?Moving in the Dark? and ?Sins of My Youth,? which only got the crowd warmed up. The furious pace and infectious energy of Glenn?s performance, along with drummer Elaine Bradley?s spot-on beats, brought the vibe in the room up another level.
The band geared down in the middle of the set when Glenn performed a solo piano version of ballad ?Your Surrender,? which can justifiably invite comparisons to Mercury and his performances of Queen classics like ?Somebody to Love.? The energy ramped right back up after that, and Glenn even managed to change up his wardrobe.
They saved their two biggest hit singles, ?Animal? and ?Everybody Talks,? for the end of the set, the latter of which leaving the crowd yearning for more. With the type of electric presence Glenn brings and the way the rest of the band supplements his energy, Neon Trees are quickly becoming one of the must-see live acts in all of popular music.
